    In the afternoon, Kerrie and Shelly rode their bicycles 4 miles more than three times the distance in miles they rode on the morning on a trip to the lake. If the entire trip was 112 miles, how far did they ride in the morning and how far in the afternoon?

    The set up is very important. Solving for x is easy here.

    I say "Finish it"!
    (Yes, I know you say you are just asking about the set buy it hurts not to see a math problem finished!)

    Therefore, x+ 3x+ 4= 112. 4x+ 4= 112.
    4x= 112- 4= 108. x= 108/4= 27.

    Check: in the morning they rode x= 27 miles. In the afternoon they rode 3x+ 4= 3(27)+ 4= 81+ 4= 85 miles. That is a total of 27+ 85= 112 miles.

    I say NO. I am interested in the set up. How many times must I say the same thing?
